When militant atheists and militant Christians and militant Jews fight, does this weaken the Democratic Party?

When militant believers and anti-believers fight over rival religious and/or metaphysical beliefs, instead of uniting over the practical moral challenges of fighting against poverty, racism, intolerance and environmental destruction — aren’t we potentially helping to “divided the house” of the Democratic Party, in a way, and helping conservative Republicans to stage a recovery?

You don’t provide an example, but your repeated use of the word ‘militant’ and ‘fight’ makes me want to say yes, the party is weakened. But on the other hand, sometimes important concepts get aired and the party comes out the other side stronger. No party is uniform, but the Republicans have cowtowed to a party minority for years, and succumbed to a level of infighting that still divides their ranks. I’d say at this point that the Republican party is still in self-destruct mode. They do not have the leader or leaders out there currently to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and represent their core constituency, which is why so many fled and supported Obama.

In the case of Lincoln, he was shrewd enough to assemble a team of his rivals, knowing that by drawing them close the nation would benefit in the long run. It was an appropriate gesture for the times.
