Jesus Ascension Painting

Why do we gesture upwards when referring to where god is?
ok, i know an obvious answer is – from the ascension – all the biblical painting depict jesus rising up cause the bible states “he rose up”
but that had to have come from somewhere else previously. how could the human eye see where a spirit goes when first leaving the body after death? why not to either side?
i suppose the question is, why is heaven up and hell down?
where did that concept first originate?
I think common sense tells us that we pay respect for the dead when giving them a final resting place underneath the earth. It represents finality and the end of man.
Only the sky above us and at night especially shows us the majesty of unlimited being. The light of the sun shows us warmth and we see all things as they are on the earth because of it. There is no deception here that can hide from the light of the sun. And the sun is not made of our hands but is powerful and gives life to all that is on the earth. From this place above us we project a power or being greater than man and he above us. While all that is man and finite separates us from. It is hell to be stuck here on earth without the power to rise to heaven. Only by seeing water evaporate into the air as steam and become one with the air do we perceive of escaping and joining into that air above us.
