Jesus Christ Superstar Songs List

I have questions on Jesus Christ Superstar?
I saw the musical Jesus Christ Superstar starring Ted Neeley with my chorus class. We have to do a worksheet on it there are some things I’m not so sure on.. If you know a lot about this I’m sure you can help.. thanks..
It asks to list a “rhythm song” which is like a song with a reaccuring rhythm that makes you tap your feet, and I said King Herod’s song. Is that correct?
Also we have to list a “patter song”. I don’t understand this one at all. Help Please?
We also have to list a reprise (a song that was sung once, but then was sung again later in the show just with a different rhythm or lyrics). Was everything’s alright sung twice? Or is their a better example i can use?
Last question… Would the finale song be superstar, the crucifixion or john 19:41?
please help and thanks!
Actually I’d call “Herod’s Song” the patter song – he’s got a lot of vocals that can be run together or almost spoken over the score – and “Everything’s All Right” as the rhythm song. “Everything’s All Right” has that neat syncopated rhythm that makes you want to sway with it like a stoned hippy.
Actually two songs are reprised for sure – “Gethsemane” is reprised instrumentally at the end as “John 19:41″ – it’s the same melody, “Listen surely I’ve exceeded expectations, tried for 3 years, seems like 30″ and so on. And “Superstar” itself is reprised. It’s sung during the course of the musical, then reprised at the end in the big finale. Which comes to your last question, the Finale is of course Superstar. The Crucifixion is stream-of-conciousness music (oh-so-’70’s)meant to express Jesus’ feelings or thoughts as he dies and the Words on the Cross and all that, and John 19:41 is meant to express the sadness of it all and hopefully make you cry. (Andrew Lloyd Webber loves to make you cry if he can.)
Now these things are all my opinion of course, but I sang in “JCS” as a kid, 30 years ago this year as a matter of fact, wore out one set of vinyl LPs and had to get it on CD. I know Jesus Christ Superstar about as well as anyone, but a teacher that’s going to assign a stupid worksheet about a fairly complex musical like this after one viewing isn’t the brightest crayon in the box and might not care for my brilliant ideas. :-p
Anyway, Good Luck!
PS If the cat goddess thinks the section of “Gethsemane” I’m talking about is not the same melody as “John 19:41″ she has a tin ear. Whether one is instrumental and the other is vocal is immaterial. It’s still the same melody being reprised.

Jesus Christ Superstar (Original London Concept Recording) $14.24 It may not have been the first rock opera (the Who’s Tommy was released in 1969), but Jesus Christ Superstar was a legendary album long before it hit the stage, thanks to Tim Rice’s compelling book and lyrics combined with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s irresistible music. Telling the story of the last days of Christ from the point of view of Judas (Murray Head), the still-unmatched original cast also star… |

Jesus Christ Superstar: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Album $14.39 This 1974 Norman Jewison film may have been a critical misstep, but some fans actually preferred it to Broadway’s rock spectacle. The thing is, Jesus Christ Superstar was first introduced as a two-disc rock opera, not unlike the Who’s Tommy, as it even scored several Top 40 hits. While no set matches the original, it’s still hard to go wrong with the music, no matter what the source. This also inc… |
