Jesus Christ Superstar (Special Edition) $5.45 Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison’s screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice “rock opera,” which was a smash on stage in the early ’70s. Jewison (Other People’s Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Webber and Rice’s dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of princi… |

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat $12.46 Donny Osmond stars in the title role of the young man sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, but who rises to power in Egypt and manages to save his family’s lives, in this lively stage presentation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical. Richard Attenborough, Joan Collins and Maria Friedman also star; songs include “Any Dream Will Do,” “Close Every Door to Me,” and “Go Go Go Joseph.” 78 … |

Tommy $5.83 If you’ve ever wanted to hear Jack Nicholson sing (or try to) or marvel at the sight of Ann-Margret drunkenly cavorting in a cascade of baked beans, Tommy is the movie you’ve been waiting for. It… |

Jesus Christ Superstar (Original London Concept Recording) $14.24 It may not have been the first rock opera (the Who’s Tommy was released in 1969), but Jesus Christ Superstar was a legendary album long before it hit the stage, thanks to Tim Rice’s compelling book and lyrics combined with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s irresistible music. Telling the story of the last days of Christ from the point of view of Judas (Murray Head), the still-unmatched original cast also star… |

Godspell $5.01 Jesus was a pretty popular guy in New York in 1971; as the ersatz star of both Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. If Superstar was a little dark, Godspell was positively frothy; and its portrayal of Jesus as a hippie clown was part of its goofy charm. Another part was Stephen Schwartz’s nifty score; a little naive and dated, but also as hummable as anything in history. Slap this in the CD player… |
