Jesus Crucifixion Artwork

In artwork, Jesus is pictured wearing a loincloth at the crucifixion. Is there a biblical basis for this?

Perhaps it is not important, but it seems that the humiliation would be even worse, if otherwise.

I’ve heard that they crucified criminals naked, and that Jesus was likely naked on the cross.

John 19:23-24, “Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.”

The scripture doesn’t say that they left him with a loin cloth on, and it doesn’t say they didn’t. Artists of centuries past put a loin cloth on Christ on their own since no scripture says he wore one. Perhaps they were showing humility for Christ in not painting a naked man.

I copied the following from an article that says we can’t be sure if Jesus was naked or not:

“Was Jesus naked and exposed on the cross? Men were ordinarily crucified naked.[25] Schneider tells us, “Sometimes [the condemned person] was stripped and his clothes were divided among the executioners, though this was not the common rule.”[26] The very purpose of crucifixion was utter humiliation for the condemned. What would be more humiliating than to strip a person naked.

But among the Jews, nakedness, particularly nakedness in public, was considered exceedingly shameful. Edersheim cites Sanhedrin vi.3.4 that in Jewish executions by stoning, “the criminal was undressed, only the covering absolutely necessary for decency being left.” While he concedes that Jesus was executed by Romans, not Jews, he feels that “every concession would be made to Jewish custom” and thus Jesus would have been spared the indignity of exposure as being “truly un-Jewish.”[27] Green, on the other hand, assumes Jesus’ nakedness at the crucifixion.[28] Was Jesus naked on the cross? We just can’t be sure.”
