Because some Renaissance painters did so.
And a thing which I sure know that is wrong: some ‘christian nudist’ groups use the paintings of Jesus of that Renaissance painters to prove that nothing is wrong with the nudism
in Jesus’ Baptism painting some painters painted Jesus nude.Is that ok? That is the used painting for nudists.

Because It was historically accurate. Criminals who were crucified by the Romans did not go to the cross with their clothes on. To add to their humiliation and to act as a deterrent – they would have been stripped. Clothes of the executed would go as “payment” to the executors.
