Jesus Wept

The subjects of the English sentence: visible, invisible

Subject rather than the predicate, is a grammatical unit consisting a noun or pronoun that represents the entity performing the action. Example:

Jesus wept.

Name "Jesus" is the subject and the verb "cry" is the predicate.

The definition of "subject", said above is a temporary definition, because, as we shall show, the English sentence allows other grammatical units-plus names or pronouns to act as as subjects.

Names and subject pronouns

When subjects are nouns or pronouns, they are very visible and they can be easily identify. In the next sentence, we can clearly see that Dick and I "are the subjects of the sentence.

Dick and I gone in the game Sunday.

"Dick" is of course a name or a nickname (if you want), and me, a personal pronoun.

Now, try to locate the phrase in the following example:

Justice is blind.

"Justice" is a noun and precedes the verb 'is. " However, the name of justice "is an abstract noun and as an abstraction, it is invisible. However, its position and its function, we can see that it is the subject of the sentence.

a) The ego and the ego inventions are Freudian.

b) daffodils bloom in spring.

c) the dawn.

As a summary of the discussion above, let us agree: During this time the subjects in the example (a) are the "self" and "me" the object in the example (b) are the 'daffodils,' and 'Dawn' in the example (c). We can now generalize and that the names, both concrete and abstract, are often the subjects of sentences.

Imperatives as subjects

Not Do not!

Note that "Do not" precedes the verb "do" and it acts as the subject of the sentence.

Do we argue not about that!

Again, "Let us not" precedes the word "claim" and acts as a subject of the sentence.

Proceedings as subjects

a) To own riches is the dream of the poor

b) To see that through difficult or impossible

c) to fight with a child is a coward

In example (a) "To own wealth "is a verbal infinitive acting as subject, and is" see through ", in example (b). In example (c) "to Fighting is a gift participle acting as a subject of the sentence.

Conclusion

The subjects of the English sentence fall into five groups:

Concrete names

abstract nouns

Pronouns

Imperatives

Minutes (infinitives and participles)

Subject as opposed to the main, is a grammatical unit consisting of a Name (concrete or abstract), a personal pronoun, the imperatives and verbal.
